There used to be a time when any member of the Society could suggest animé to watch in meetings. However, recently it seems like only the Exec have this power, and in some cases just the President. It is felt that this is not the best way to do things. Enter this thread. This thread is for suggesting animé series, films, OVAs, etc. to watch in the meetings, and for discussing any aspect of what we watch and how we watch it (e.g. showing 1 "long" and 2 "short" series per meeting through each term). A "long" series is roughly 26 episodes, and at 3 episodes per week roughly runs for the length of 1 term. A "short" series is half of this (13-ish episodes, runs for half a term). Your suggestions will be seriously considered, and put to a vote when appropriate (towards the start of a term in the case of what animé to show). Voting will take place on this very forum, and will be decided by the simple "majority rules" system. Some topics to get you started (note that they're not all great topics): - What kinds of series do you want to watch? All comedies, all horrors, a good mix of genres, etc.
- Do you enjoy watching 1 long and 2 short series per day per term? Might you rather watching some films or OVAs instead/as well as the series? In what combination?
- For that matter, are the days good for you? Might you want the meetings at different times? A different number of meetings?
- How much influence should the members have, when compared to the Exec, over what we should watch, and when/where/how? A 50/50 split between members and Exec (each Exec member would could as several people when they vote)? Communist rules (every person is equal)? Other?

The [relatively] old man seated himself at the end of the table, and stacked the four volumes beside a porcelain decanter, and raising his sunken eyes to [passersby], murmured these words in a weak and shaking voice and yet with a certain dignity as though it were not simply a case of having to get through the ritual, but that it was now, as always, well worth getting through.Since I remember the first time this reform was introduced (with unweighted voting, incidentally), a couple of historical notes: the rule used to be 'series on Mondays, films/OVAs/anything else that's short on Fridays', but we ran out of the latter back then. The case may be different now. (Fridays were also sometimes used for trying out possible series by showing the first one or two episodes.) We discussed changing meeting dates a while back, and I think the conclusion was that there's a clash risk no matter what one does. Oh, one other note: sometimes you may end up considering stuff that isn't fully fansubbed yet, in which case it's necessary to be able to expect that it will be. (I once had to have it pointed out to me that Futakoi Alternative wouldn't be fully subbed in time.) Anyway. I'd be mildly interested to know whether making these fora useful again helps to make them more a hive of sociability – I shouldn't imagine it'll be a sufficient condition, and if James is as successful with this drive as he has been in the increasingly masochistic attempts to bring a quiz into being then we may yet have to find another use for them – but I probably shan't be that active in making suggestions. [...] and if James is as successful with this drive as he has been in the increasingly masochistic attempts to bring a quiz into being [...] For your interest, the quiz will (finally) be held this Monday (3rd) during the meeting. Come along, why don't you, and see how well you fare?

Badly, for sure; I'm seriously rusty on anime topics. Anyway, I'm not doing Mondays at present, and it's a cold walk to the Science Site.
I don't want you to suffer, but it would be illiberal to stand in your way in this case. I do hope other people bother to be kinder than I, though—

*Dodges around the comments that may be interpreted as spikey*
hmm, two of my personal likes that I can reccomend for a look-over are:
Yami no Matsuei: Stuck in a dead-end job? Always owing your salary back on damages? Utterly obsessed with cake? Sounds like the Judgement Burea is for you!
Yami no Matsuei (Descendants of Darkness) was originally a 12/13 volume manga, and has been done as a 13 episode anime series. It focuses on Asato Tsuzuki, a shinigami who aids those who have died and not yet passed on to move to the next life, he is tortured by his past but still gives off the impression of being a little childish. He and his partner Hisoka Kurosaki travel between the world of the living and the dead chasing after various nasty beasties, oh, and there's a psycoticly evil villain to top it all off.
Genre(s): Mild horror, fantasy, some comedy, sliiiiight shounen-ai (sorry about that :S) Length: 13 episodes Other notes: I have the dvd sub/dubbed and I can lend it to the society.
Hellsing: What a perfect night..
Hellsing follows the story of the Hellsing family organisation, a long running and highly secret organisation in England (woo!) that focuses on ridding the night of undead 'freaks'. Their boss is Sir Integra Wingates Hellsing. The family has a trump card in the form of a rogue - and extremely powerful - vampire named Alucard. On one of the first missions in the series, Alucard turns a young police girl named Victoria Seras into a vampire. The anime justabout follows the manga.
Genre(s): horror, fantasy, slightly graphic, lots of strong language (but only from the bad guys) Length: 24-26 episodes, I can't remember Other notes: I can *cough* aquire a dvd of this one through some sneaky borrowing tactics and a dvd ripper. ^^

I'm already watching Bleach Genre(s): Mild horror, fantasy, some comedy, sliiiiight shounen-ai (sorry about that :S) Don't apologise Other notes: I can *cough* aquire a dvd of this one through some sneaky borrowing tactics and a dvd ripper. ^^ I shouldn't think acquiring animé is a difficult task, if you're willing to look past that "law" thing. Oh, the joys of bittorrent... Another

I remember when we showed Yami no Matsuei (back when Don was president; I don't think he'd checked it first): based on that, you may find several male members sitting it out, muttering about 'phantom sodomites'. (Do I get a survival medal?) Of course, similar things have happened with GANTZ and Elfin Lied.
I had it in mind to comment on the decline of traditional fansub ethics [sic] and its relation to technological and legal developments in the meantime, but if you're not following the copyfight already (I mean, besides the Odex affair) I don't imagine you'll be anxious to start. (It would derail the thread anyway.)

Ah I don't mind the whole fansubbing/etc thing that goes on, I just bought the DVD because I wanted to make AMVs from that series and Amecon insist that you use legal footage XD I haven't heard of YnM being shown before, how long ago was that? *giggles at the Bleach comment* this has less filler!

Probably Epiphany 2004, or possibly Michaelmas. Definitely before Epiphany 2005. *Trying to remember the order of series from several years ago* EDIT: Yes, Epiphany; this place dates from Michaelmas, and presumably Paranoia Agent is the series not accounted for in the archives. I think Yami no Matsuei was probably shown alongside Sakura Taisen and Boogiepop Phantom. Oh, and now I remember Don pointing out why the Count's gloves are worrying, and Kitcatt complaining about the translation. Ah, digging through archives is interesting: fitting the theme of this thread, I found a kind of anti-recommendation. (Yup, it cuts both ways. ) *Keeps reading the old thread* I'd quite forgotten about the tentacle quota...

Who the hell put forward watching hentai at an anime soc? ¬¬ I thought something like YnM would be a bit too off-taste due to the shounen-ai... *aura of moral views*
Thanks for the information, I.D

If you're referring to the suggestions Mu-chan had marked as 'hentai' once, I'd better quote: NOTE: They weren't hentai stuff like the sickening stuff that gets onto the sci-fi channel, just stuff with some obvious sexual scenes in them that I thought should be marked accordingly. ^_^ If you're referring to the tentacle quota, that referred to a non-hentai but rather fan-servicey episode of Mai-HiME. It's been a long time since we last saw any decent squirming on these fora, so thanks for that.

I wasn't sure, since mine was the most recent post before yours.
I think Gracewing probably just saw the word 'hentai' and imagined the worst.

Has Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo been shown? That would probably be acceptable, then again I've never seen it, anyone? anyone?
Noir would be good too I guess.

I recall Gareth complaining about the slowness of Noir, but then, Kino's Journey is slower still, so that's probably just him. No idea about the other one.
