Has Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo been shown? That would probably be acceptable, then again I've never seen it, anyone? anyone? I believe we showed the first episode of that recently. It was probably in June. I don't recall the reactions, but I for one wasn't too interested.

Gankutsuou is a retelling of Alexandre Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo, with amazing textury goodness (and also in the future, also the count may be a vampire, I'm not sure). It's done by the guy who made Blue Sub 6 and Gonzo (Last Exile) so it's got a pretty good pedigree, but as I say I've never seen it so I can't really extole it's virtues or... anti-virtues?
Noir isn't particularly slow... but it is incredibly repetitive (flashback after flashback is the same, the same) but the action sequences are quite cool, and the story is quite intriguing.

It's not wildly slow, but it does take its time, with a lot of moody, pensive scenes and fights that have so little sense of endangerment to the lead characters that they play out as a kind of languidly choreographed gunplay wuxia. I really like the series, but I can see why someone might lament the pacing. (Though if we showed it we could have one of those 'But what do the gunshots in the ending mean?' debates...)

Oh Lord... I'd count that as I reason why we shouldn't show Noir... I take it back, I take it baaack!
Does anyone know anything about the other 'Girls with Guns' series that Bee Train did? That might be another idea...
On a totally different note, how 'bout Chrono Crusade? Nuns with Guns? it must be awesome!

My problem is that I tend to find most serious animé boring, precisely because they tend to be slow. One or two jokes throughout the series don't save them.
We showed the first episode of Chrno Crusade at the start of the term just gone, and that looked good enough.
It's hard to find a series to recommend that's not just half released at the moment. Let me look at what I've got...
Maria-sama ga Miteru (Marimite) - 13 episodes Potemayo - 12 episodes (plus at least 4 specials, each one 10 minutes) Vandread - 26 episodes (as 2 series of 13, could just watch the first one)
Look them up for more details. That's what the Internet's for.
And I've got a bunch of films, if we decide to go down that route.

Maruno, hold him down; I'll go and get the hypodermic. If you want a non-serious/slow 'girls with guns' recommendation, go back two or three years and try Futakoi Alternative (as in 'ai to shoujo to machineguns'); I don't have the files, though, so availability would be someone else's problem to assess.

Futakoi Alternative looks good. I'm intrigued as to how they went from 'Harem Anime, With Twins!' to 'Detective anime, with twins!'
And looking along the backlog of ufotable's other series, 'Dokkoida?!' might be worth checking out.

Yes, I recall the episodes that were shown back whenever got a mixed response. Though not as dramatically mixed as Yami no Matsuei.

Alright, I need for people to suggest some anime to put on over the next couple of terms, because at the moment I've not got a clue.
The only ideas I have is Code Geass, and the one that Felix might have shown last term but opted for Azumanga Daioh instead (I forget it's name I'm afraid - but it's good).
I know what's shown is always the president's choice, but I figure everyone else's opinion on what's good to show is as good as the president's, so help me out here.

Alright, since the Easter Term's a bit awkward in that I can only show short series (11-13 episodes each) my ideas so far are: Easter Term 09: - Rozen Maiden, because I happen to own it already. - Maria-sama ga miteru, because it was suggested last year and I hear, despite this, it's really good. I'd really love to find Zoku Sayonara Zetsubō Sensei (the second series of Sayonara Zetsubō Sensei) as well, because the first series ruled hard. It's proving to be very elusive however. Add to these a splattering of OAVs, perhaps Hellsing Ultimate for example. I'm also determined to show DragonHalf. Ideally I'd like four solid short series if I can though, I'll still be looking and open for suggestions especially if you think my current choices are gash.

That picture looks about right, actually. That plus French plus nothing really happening. Still, it gives some context to the Marimite references in an episode of Lucky Star. My version of "Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei" is spread between a.f.k., anon and volans. Volans was quite a good fansubber, as I recall. gg is also good, but it'd probably be hard to find their stuff around (if they did Zoku at all - they did Goku, at least). Dragon Half All both episodes. Still, it's quite good, and it's a shame it was dropped. Here's some anime I've seen that could fit into the "short series" slots and that may be appropriate (this is only from my part of the collection on my computer - I can't be bothered looking through all my DVDs): - Antique Bakery (12 episodes). It's about a patisserie and pretty men (one of whom is the "Gay of Demonic Charm"). Better than it may sound.
- Ga-Rei Zero (12 episodes). Demon powers, secret government groups, high-school girls and Irons of Mass Destruction (yes, the kind you make clothes flat with). Not a comedy.
- Kannagi (13 episodes). An amnesiac goddess spawns from a wooden statue carved from a holy tree, and decides to regain her worshippers by becoming a celebrity.
- Kurenai (12 episodes). A 16-year-old "dispute specialist" becomes the bodyguard of the 7-year-old child of an oppressive plutocratic family.
- Kyou no Go no Ni (13 episodes/4 OVAs). Today in Class 4-2. Slice o' life.
- Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi (13 episodes). Two children jump between realities and hilarity ensues. And confusion. There's a lot of confusion. But 'tis highly amusing.
- Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu (12 episodes). I think it was mentioned around here before. Fairly typical of its genre, really.
- Tetsuwan Birdy Decode (13 episodes). A high-school boy and an alien policewoman with awesome shoes meet, and it doesn't end well. Then evil people try to make the planet blow up by using some Evil In A Can (or girl, actually). I'm not good at descriptions, but it's better than it sounds here.
- Yozakura Quartet (12 episodes). Demons, ghouls, spirits and zombies live in a special town surrounded by epically tall sakura trees, away from the shunning of the rest of the world. If the trees were ever to bloom, everyone would return to a nightmare dimension. Guess what the bad guy is trying to do...
And there's also the option to just show films. You could try the Evangelion Rebuild one, for instance. Way back when, in the early days of the society (4+ years ago), one of the two meetings per week was for showing random films (not even necessarily anime). Might be a good idea for before the exams, so that people won't miss out on part of a series if have to skip a meeting for some reason.

Thanks, that's a really great help. I had forgotten about Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi in particular, since I've been lucky enough to see some of that before.
Films also is a consideration, especially as they tend to be easier to get hold of. I could introduce the soc to the delights of Urotsukidoji ;D

I could introduce the soc to the delights of Urotsukidoji ;D You do that, and you'll be the first President to get voted out of office. ;D Boku no Pico, on the other hand...

Balls, I might not be able to show Marimite after all. It's been licensed since I began to download them from Lililicious and the licensor appears to have ruined everything. I suppose it may not have been everyone's cup of tea anyway...
