I've been watching this series, as it happens. The official pronunciation is actually 'Mai Otome', as the series deals with Otomes, rather than HiMEs, though I prefer to call it 'Mai Zeta Hime'.
The best description for the series I've found comes from the Mai Hime vs Mai Otome promo:
a super yuri lesbian story

Clearly the general public haven't heard of the right animés. No, wait, animé is strange. Don't know what I was thinking there. But people just need to be more open-minded.

personally one of the reasons I joined the anime society was to get to see more of it as I can't afford to get the stuff on my own.
also with the sci-fi and fantasy society I'm glad I go because there's lots of great films I would never otherwise have seen

Trust me, I've seen literally hundreds of anime series...by weird I meant compared to the first, and also considering how conclusive the first series was, I don't see it going anywhere. I could be wrong though, but I'll wait till someone has reviewed a decent number of eps first.
