Since we've lost Creeping Malaise, I'm posting the following links, which I'm fairly confident were part of the discussion arising out of the Suicide Episode: news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/newsnight/4071805.stmwww.theforeigner-japan.com/archives/200304/news.htmforum.japantoday.com/m_16443/mpage_1/key_/tm.htmUnfortunately I can't remember much about our plot analysis debates. As far as I can remember we never managed to form a theory about the role of the old man and his numbers. I know I was pushing some sort of Sartre-esque interpretation, with Shounen Bat as a representation of something like Bad Faith. Apart from that I can't remember much, but if anyone can remember anything that deserves to be remembered, feel free to post it. Oh, and we never did get remotely close to determining when those three died...

In my own head I had a place for the old guy, where/when those three died and *even* understanding shounen bat (to some extent at least). I don't like ending an anime series with loose ends

people are afraid to die alone... the irony is that they always do, even when in company

Well, they may be alone in death, but the actual act of dying would be done in the knowledge that even if you don't die some other fucker will. It's a kind of company.

That happens anyway; people die all the time. Just then, for example.

Someone, somewhere. It happens all the time.

... poor tatse, but really, I don't think people are gouing to go killing temselves just because a poster told them to, and if they do they are almost certainly extremely unbalanced to begin with

Why so against hanging but not any of the other numerous suicide methods that were tried in the show? Has hanging yourself got a reputation as being a 'glamourous' way to go? Surely on the grounds it features people harming themselves and attempting suicide the whole episode should be cut.

On the other hand, it provides a vital insight into the nature of sb. There's plenty to be said against such censorship. I don't think it's acceptable to remove media originally intended by the author/artist because of how it *could* affect *some* people. If the need's there then just label the box with some kind of warning, perhaps above and beyond a simple age limit, and let people choose for themselves. I don't believe the job of the censor is to prevent suggestable people from acting on what they see, rather to warn those about to watch the media of content they (or their parents) believe they don't want to see.
Maybe "not suitable for the terminally stupid" or, more sensibly, "warning, contains a graphic depiction of suicide"? I appreciate that people who have suicidal leanings are not necessarily stupid, still they'd benefit from such a label if they're trying to cope.

hmmm, I guess this question is innevitable, but what's the appeal of hanging? I mean it's a fairly long and painful way to go, certainly when compared to the near instant death of a self inflicted gun wound
