What anime would you suggest to a friend and why?
Personally I would suggest:
FMA - because new people to anime and old can enjoy it, and the overall quality is great.
Bleach - due to some of the best designed ideas I have seen
Yakitate!! Japan - For the days you need cheering up or feel like something silly. (Watch just before or after a meal, the bread will make you hungry)

What sort of friend is this? One who knows nothing/very little of anime, one seeking out the finest that can be recommended, one seeking to expand horizons...?

What sort of friend is this? One who knows nothing/very little of anime, one seeking out the finest that can be recommended, one seeking to expand horizons...? That's always one of the biggest problems when introducing someone to animé. If they initially watch something they're not fond of, or they watch something that everyone knows isn't a good example of what animé has to offer (I'm looking at Pokémon here), then they're less likely to be interested in watching more of it. As an introduction, I'd say they watch short things like movies or short OVAs. They can wach several, and get an idea of what animé is all about, before moving on to the longer things (such as Bleach or Prince of Tennis (ahem)). Longer series tend to be slower paced, and the newbies just might not be interested in watching 13 hours' worth of something to decided whether the genre is something they're interested in. Personally I'm not overly fond of Studio Ghibli movies. Yes, I know they look very pretty and so forth, but there's just something about them that doesn't quite do it for me. Maybe it's because it reminds me of Disney too much. I prefer things like Bleach because it's simply cool, and is aimed at an older audience anyway, so it is allowed to be the way it is.

Maruno, I see you're point, however i feel a completed series, no matter how long or a movie like howl's moving castle is the way forward.
The movie due to its completeness on its own (excluding ones like FMA)
A full series has the attraction that if they like it, they can see all of it, but an individual episode is short, so if its not for them they dont feel like they have wasted 2-3 hours of their life.

I would go with the movie option, and I would certainly not ignore Ghibli (amidst all the bashing), as they are probably the most accessible studio around, and an excellent starting point.
Anyways, I'd agree with mu-chan; show them an anime version of a genre they are already interested in.

Ah, AIR the movie I think would be a good choice. Then there's the 13 episode series that expands on it, which isn't too long but makes it so much better.

The 'Top wo Narae! Gunbuster' OVA is a fun sciency-mecha series to introduce sci-fi fans to subtitled original-language anime. Not to mention acquainting them with the Gainax bounce early on; from that they can graduate to Bio-Concerto , or run away a little the wiser. EDIT: To clarify, I'm not saying it's a bad choice, just that there's an aspect that may count against it (and of course the same applies to various other anime).

*Topic Necromancy*
Berserk, because it is awesome. GantZ, because it is awesome. Death Note for the same reasons. Ah! My Goddess, because it is awesome, and girly. Macross, all series'. Soap Opera, in space. With robots. And awesome music. Reasonable sci-fi aswell. Guyver OVAs, though the new series was also very very good.

Ghosthunt is a very good supernatural mystery anime
Detective Conan is like an anime version of sherlock holmes in a sense along with a major subplot ( don't want to spoil for people who havnt seen it)
Shana is a fun lighhearted action anime
