Ooo, only Steamboy for the English dub? I personally prefer Spirited Away in English due to (in no small part) Japanese Chihiro's incredibly shrill voice. I know she is supposed to be annoying but good GOD... Actually, now you mention it, I myself have only ever watched Spirited Away with the English dub on. I watched it with family. ...(read; less focused on the incessant bickering) But that's the best bit!

...(read; less focused on the incessant bickering) But that's the best bit! Haha! Yes that's true bickering is always funny (reminded of the sequence in the second episode when they fall to Earth and all Ryoko does is laugh and laugh and laugh) but it was just nice to have a pseudo-serious take on the Tenchi franchise for once... besides, everybody knows the bits with Washu were the most awesome And not that we really had a choice, but English dub Tenchi!! Dispite the constant references to getting drunk on 'tea' (which is corrected in the DVD dubs, Huzzah!), the English cast will always have a special place in my heart....

It's not so much "corrected" as it is "de-censored". Can't have the little kiddies hearing the word "sake", now, can we? They can still see all the effects, though.) Nor can they see all the fanservice (instead they're left to puzzle why Ayeka is so tremendously embarassed by Tenchi seeing her swimsuit). Once again, censorship sucks. Tenchi Muyo! is my favourite of the series, methinks (I haven't seen Tenchi in Tokyo for years, and certainly not un-censored). It's the original, it's not too long, for the most part it's not episodic, and Tenchi beating up Kagato with a single blow rocks. Tenchi Universe, meh. Universe was way too slow for my liking. They introduced all the characters at once, and then "let's go on an adventure!" (particularly the alternate universes stuff in the middle, which wasn't bad but you know...). Tenchi in Tokyo I thought was good, because SPOILER!!!!! (it actually had Tenchi being attracted to someone). In other news, I'll recommend Bleach. I think it hasn't been mentioned yet, but everyone knows it's great so perhaps that's why. I love all the weapons and the fighting styles, not to mention Ishida's sheer genius.

Oh tomayto tomahto... surely it's worse to be teaching children that tea is a colourless liquid that comes in glass bottles and makes you.... happy? Also; Tenchi in Tokyo was probably the least censored, although all the pre-title bits were cut for time, so the stories can be a bit smooshed (hehe, 'The White Snowfall is my favourite soap, all the characters have amnesia!') so you haven't really missed out on much. I personally have never watched Bleach, and being a 'can't be bothered to download and watch all the episodes and watch them yadadada' lazybones that I am I probably never will, but it sounds good, although I am puzzled by the sudden influx of shinigami into the anime industry lately.... Which would lead me nicely on to Death Note if I could be bothered to plug it. Instead I'd urge people to watch The Castle of Cagliostro. The first film that Hayao Miyazaki ever directed, I have to say it's aged well, and Lupin is a pretty awesome dude. It has all the standard Miyazaki cliches (Hero, Heroine, bad dude, cool stuff, prettiness), but less of the overarching message and more impotus on endearing characters with absurd powers (MINISPOILER; Lupin is able to climb sheer vertical walls with his bare hands..?) doing cool Bond-esque stuff and saving the girl at the end... brilliant.

It's entertaining, sure, but it's just not what I've come to expect of the series. I've just finished watching the short film Dead Leaves, and it's some good stuff. It's some 47 odd minutes long, emphasis on "odd". Its animation style is refreshingly different and well done. Go give it a glimpse. Also, Toradora!. It's one of the very very few anime I've been hooked on from the first episode. It's being released at the moment (currently six episodes have been released, out of a total of I don't know - hopefully 26, which is possible since the light novel version has 9 books and is still going). Seriously do watch it, and also show it at Anime Soc once it's fully out so everyone can appreciate it. I don't have enough thumbs to put up to express how good it is.

Lot of interesting recommendations here that I should really check out when I have the time. Unfortunately, I don't really have anything that you guys wouldn't have all probably already heard of.. The only thing that I can think of right now that I can recommend, which I'm sure not everyone has seen is Steamboy. Directed by Katsuhiro Otomo (who also directed Akira), this film is a beautiful work which can be enjoyed by anyone. In particular, it's a magnificent treat for anyone who enjoyed the likes of Last Exile and Laputa: Castle in the Sky or indeed any steampunk sci-fi/fantasy, anime or otherwise (anyone read any Girl Genius comics?). The visuals and animation live up to the impossibly high standard attained in Akira and, interestingly, this would be the only anime I would recommend viewing with the english dub rather than subs, for two reasons: 1. The story is set in England; 2. Patrick Stewart. Akira, Last Exile and Laputa? Steampunk Sci-fi/Fantasy?! Patrick Stewart??! I think you got a sale from me there.

I've seen Steamboy too, and it's good. I suspect I watched the Japanese version, though, so no Patrick Stewart. Actually, I don't remember much about it at all, but that just proves that I didn't think it was a bad thing.
I've kept hearing about this "Death Note" thing. Is it really that worth watching?

Death Note is pretty unique for me in animes, in that it utterly grabbed me from the start and wouldn't let go. I'm 18 episodes into it now, and it seems to have gone in a bit of an iffy direction, which has left me a bit unsure what to think. I'd still recommend it, but I'd reserve my complete judgment until I've finished watching it all.

Death Note is rather spangly and everyone should watch it in my opinion!!!! However my contribution to recommended anime is Monster. It is amazing. I dont need to say anymore. Just watch.

yo can anyone recommend me a series? I'll give you some specs:
Thought-provoking setting: I loved Trigun and Last Exile, largely due to the hugely imaginative settings. Uncovering more information about the desert planet in trigun was just as interesting to me as the gradual exposition of vash's character. similarly, last exile's dune-meets-steampunk character was awesome, and the final revelation about the world of prester was pretty mind blowinggg.
little/no fanservice: seriously, i watched elfen lied last academic year and was branded a pedophile by my housemate almost instantaneously. and i had to agree, was the sexualization of teenage girls really necessary?
short run: basically, i like to marathon through stuff. like i managed to read about 30 volumes of Berserk in the space of 2 days earlier in the year, its helps me get into the setting ahaha. This is pretty important since I know that a series like one of the gundam sagas would be really ideal for me (intricate setting, rich political backstory, completely free of lolicon) but the fact that every series is like a million episodes long puts me off a little bit (at least, until i've finished all my assignments for the term :/ )
tl;dr: so baaaaaasically, what series are out there that have an interesting intricate setting and aren't long as fuck?

What? How the hell does watching Elfen Lied make you a paedo? Escaping from fanservice is notoriously difficult, mostly you either accept it with open arms or learn to tune it out (I mainly do the former depending on the series). Anyway, (and perhaps predictably nowadays) the last proper good series I watched that wasn't an odyssey in terms of its length, nor contained any fanservice or other gratuitous messing around was in fact Death Note. In response, therefore, to both you and Maruno, it really is worth watching, though I can say that not everyone will get as much out of it as others.

... good series ... [that didn't contain] any fanservice or other gratuitous messing around ... I fail to see how that's possible. I'll agree about Falciferum's statement against "Elfen Lied" being for paedo's, though. You did notice the infinite amounts of blood, severed limbs and blood in it, didn't you? If you think there's a lot of sexualisation of girls in that series, you really haven't seen much anime. As for your query about what to watch, your examples seem to be the kind of thing I don't really watch (except "Trigun", which I like). Off the top of my head, there's... umm...: Dennou Coil Serial Experiments Lain Neon Genesis Evangelion AIR FLCL Tetsuwan Birdy Decode It's hard to think of something that matches your vague description. Practically every story (let alone anime) will have developments and revelations. Different things are interesting to different people.

I think it's quite tame. There is much worse out there. Believe me.

yo i don't want to de-rail into a debate about what level of nudity is acceptable for young girls in animation (hint: its none) but cheers for the rec of Dennō Coil. i'd been meaning to check it out but the obvious comparisons to Lain it draws put me off a bit.
another series that has been recommended to me is Kino's Journey, anyone got any 2nd opinions they can offer me?
